From Practitioner to Architect: The Cloud Certifications That Pay Big
Breaking through the entry-level ceiling: how AWS and Azure expert certifications unlock higher pay and bigger roles.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve run spotlights on readers who are just starting their journeys with entry-level certifications like AWS Cloud Practitioner and Azure Fundamentals. Their stories reminded us that these foundational certs are a fantastic way to break into cloud—but they’re also just the beginning.
This week, we’re shifting gears to focus on the advanced certifications. These are the credentials that transform you from a practitioner into an architect, from someone who “uses” the cloud to someone who designs, secures, and optimizes it at scale. And as you’ll see, the career payoff can be huge.

Why Advanced Certifications Matter
Cloud has matured. Most enterprises aren’t just experimenting anymore—they’re running critical workloads on AWS and Azure that demand uptime, scalability, and airtight security. This means the market increasingly values professionals who can step into senior-level roles and guide organizations through that complexity.
Advanced certifications act as proof points that you’ve reached that level. They don’t just test knowledge of services; they validate your ability to solve real-world challenges:
Designing architectures that span multiple regions, meet compliance requirements, and scale to millions of users.
Building governance frameworks to control costs and manage risk across dozens—or hundreds—of accounts and subscriptions.
Leading DevOps transformations, where CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, and observability become the backbone of delivery.
Embedding security into every layer, from identity and access to encryption and incident response.
That’s why organizations are willing to pay a premium. These certifications are less about checking a box and more about signaling that you can be trusted with mission-critical decision making. Employers see them as a shortcut to confidence: if you’ve made it through the rigor of a professional-level AWS or Azure exam, you’re likely capable of guiding strategy, not just execution.
AWS: Climbing Toward Professional and Specialty
On the AWS side, the Solutions Architect – Professional is often considered the gold standard. It requires not just mastery of AWS services but the ability to design multi-account, highly available architectures. Those who achieve it often step into Cloud Architect or Principal Engineer roles, with compensation ranging from $150K to $170K.
The DevOps Engineer – Professional validates automation and CI/CD expertise, paving the way toward senior DevOps and SRE positions. Meanwhile, the AWS Security Specialty signals deep expertise in threat detection, compliance, and encryption—skills that make Cloud Security Architects some of the most sought-after professionals in tech.
Azure: The Expert Tier
Microsoft’s advanced lineup begins with the Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305). Covering hybrid design, governance, networking, and cost control, it opens doors to senior architecture and consulting roles in the $135K–$150K range.
The Azure DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) proves proficiency in continuous delivery pipelines and Infrastructure as Code, positioning holders for lead DevOps and agile transformation roles. The Azure Security Engineer Associate may be a notch below “expert” in name, but it’s often a stepping stone to senior security leadership.
Keep This Stock Ticker on Your Watchlist
They’re a private company, but Pacaso just reserved the Nasdaq ticker “$PCSO.”
No surprise the same firms that backed Uber, eBay, and Venmo already invested in Pacaso. What is unique is Pacaso is giving the same opportunity to everyday investors. And 10,000+ people have already joined them.
Created a former Zillow exec who sold his first venture for $120M, Pacaso brings co-ownership to the $1.3T vacation home industry.
They’ve generated $1B+ worth of luxury home transactions across 2,000+ owners. That’s good for more than $110M in gross profit since inception, including 41% YoY growth last year alone.
And you can join them today for just $2.90/share. But don’t wait too long. Invest in Pacaso before the opportunity ends September 18.

The Journey Isn’t Easy—And That’s the Point
Expect three to six months of focused study for these advanced exams. The tests are scenario-driven, meaning memorization alone won’t cut it—you need hands-on experience. Setting up AWS Free Tier or Azure Free Account environments will give you the real-world perspective that exam questions demand. Pair that with practice exams and structured study paths, and you’ll be ready for test day.
Beyond salary, advanced certifications provide mobility. They can open doors to consulting, enterprise leadership, and global opportunities where multi-cloud expertise is prized. And unlike entry-level certs, these credentials often put you on a trajectory toward roles that shape business strategy, not just IT operations.
Take the Next Step
If you’re sitting on a foundational certification today, now is the time to set your sights higher. The key is choosing a direction that aligns with your interests and long-term career goals. If you enjoy big-picture design and the challenge of stitching together complex systems, the architect track is the natural fit. If automation, pipelines, and delivery speed excite you, DevOps may be your best bet. And if your instincts lean toward protecting data, compliance, and mitigating threats, security is the specialization that will make you indispensable.
Once you’ve chosen a path, create a realistic 90–120 day roadmap. Many professionals dedicate five to seven hours a week to structured study and labs, balancing theory with practice. When you read about cost optimization, for example, log into the console and actually configure budgets or experiment with Reserved Instance strategies. Schedule practice exams at regular intervals—not with the expectation of passing on the first try, but as a way to identify blind spots and refine your focus. Finally, consider joining a peer study group or finding an accountability partner. Having others on the same journey helps maintain consistency and provides encouragement when motivation dips.
By the time you sit for the exam, you’ll not only be ready to pass but will also have gained practical, scenario-based experience. That combination is what makes the certification meaningful to employers. The real win isn’t just the digital badge on your profile—it’s the transformation in how you think and operate as a cloud professional, and the career opportunities that follow.

Recommendations
Pick one advanced track (Architect, DevOps, Security) and avoid splitting your focus across multiple certifications at once.
Plan backwards: set your target exam date and work back to build a weekly study and lab schedule.
Invest in quality practice exams: Learn Azure and Learn AWS. They’ll reveal blind spots and get you used to test conditions.
Document your journey: share your progress on LinkedIn or within communities. It demonstrates initiative to employers and connects you with peers.
Don’t stop at the cert: supplement with real projects—deploy an app, automate a pipeline, secure a test environment. Hiring managers love proof you can apply what you know.
