Personal Background

Geographical Location: Living in Boston puts me right in the middle of a vibrant biotech and pharma ecosystem. Being able to contribute to innovations that ultimately improve patient outcomes is a huge motivator.

Educational Background: I earned my Bachelor’s in Information Systems from Northeastern University. The co-op program gave me early exposure to IT challenges in the life sciences space. It was during this time that I first saw how cloud technologies — particularly in AI and data analytics — could transform how we approach healthcare.

Family Life: My wife works as a clinical researcher at a biotech startup, so there’s lots of overlap in our professional worlds. Our middle-schooler loves hockey, which keeps us busy on the weekends — I’m often at the rink coaching or cheering from the stands.

Professional Journey

Current Role: I’m a Senior Cloud Engineer at a global pharmaceutical company. My focus is on building and managing Azure-based data and AI platforms that support advanced analytics, clinical trial optimization, and AI-driven drug discovery. We’re using tools like Azure Synapse, Azure Machine Learning, and Azure OpenAI Service to accelerate R&D.

Career Path: Five years ago, I was working on legacy data warehouse systems. When our company launched its cloud-first initiative — with a heavy focus on AI-driven data science — I dove into Azure training. That shift unlocked an entirely new career path and now I get to help lead some of our most innovative projects.

Professional Level: As a Senior Engineer specializing in AI and Data within pharma, I currently earn ~$170,000, plus bonuses. The combination of cloud expertise and AI/data strategy is extremely valuable in this space, and demand continues to grow.

Outside Interests

Hobbies and Passions: Hockey is a huge part of my life. I grew up playing and now I coach my son’s team. I also enjoy following NHL analytics — I even built a personal project using Azure services to analyze player performance trends. It’s a fun way to blend my passions for data and sports.

Community Involvement: I volunteer with a local STEM outreach group that introduces high school students to AI and cloud computing. It’s rewarding to help the next generation of tech talent discover how these tools can change the world.

Outsmart college costs

Ready for next semester? June is a key time to assess how you’ll cover college costs. And considering federal aid often isn’t enough, you might have to consider private student loans.

You’re just in time, though—most schools recommend applying about two months before tuition is due. By now, colleges start sending final cost-of-attendance letters, revealing how much you’ll need to bridge the gap.

Understanding your options now can help ensure you’re prepared and avoid last-minute stress. View Money’s best student loans list to find lenders with low rates and easy online application.

Learning and Development

Learning Techniques: I take a project-based approach to learning. When new Azure AI/Data services are released, I build mini-projects to understand their strengths and limitations. Microsoft Learn is a great starting point, but practical experimentation is key to mastering these tools.

Passion Projects: In addition to my NHL analytics project, I’ve been building an AI-powered health insights dashboard that pulls data from wearable devices and visualizes it with Azure Power BI and Azure Cognitive Services. It’s a personal project that has taught me a lot about integrating disparate data sources securely and efficiently.

Cloud Certification Pursuits

Motivation for Certification: In a regulated industry like pharma, certifications validate both technical skills and an understanding of governance and compliance. They also help demonstrate my readiness to lead AI-driven cloud initiatives within our company.

Specific Certifications: I currently hold AZ-104 (Azure Administrator), AZ-305 (Azure Solutions Architect Expert), and AI-102 (Azure AI Engineer Associate). Next on my list is DP-203 (Azure Data Engineer) to further deepen my data engineering expertise.

Study Resources: I rely heavily on Microsoft Learn, but also use LinkedIn Learning and Udemy courses. Hands-on labs and practice exams are essential — they force me to apply what I’m learning in practical, exam-relevant scenarios.

Experiences and Insights

Certification Journey: Each certification has provided new perspectives on Azure’s capabilities. AI-102 was particularly impactful — it gave me the tools to confidently implement AI services and collaborate more effectively with data scientists in our R&D teams.

Helpful Strategies: Build small projects that mimic real-world problems. The pharma world is full of complex data challenges, so practicing with diverse datasets and AI models is great preparation — both for exams and for on-the-job success.

Advice to Others: Don’t get discouraged if AI or data engineering seem daunting at first. Start with foundational cloud skills, then progressively layer on AI and data expertise. The community is incredibly supportive — leverage it!

Future Aspirations

Post-Certification Plans: I’m aiming to lead a cross-functional initiative that integrates Azure OpenAI with our clinical data platforms to streamline trial design and analysis.

Long-Term Goals: Ultimately, I want to become a Cloud AI & Data Architect for the life sciences industry — helping organizations harness the full power of AI in ways that are responsible, secure, and truly impactful for patient outcomes.

Additional Thoughts

Community Impact: I’m passionate about helping early-career professionals — especially those in non-traditional backgrounds — break into AI and cloud roles. Diversity of thought is critical in this space, and I love mentoring newcomers who bring fresh perspectives.

Feedback: I’d love to see more certification resources focused on AI use cases in regulated industries like pharma and healthcare. Practical examples are invaluable when applying these technologies in sensitive, high-stakes environments.
