For Lucas H., that moment came while working on backend systems that were gradually moving to AWS. What started as curiosity quickly turned into a structured learning path that led him to earn the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification, with his sights now set on AWS Solutions Architect – Associate.

Lucas lives in Latin America and balances a busy career in software development with family life and ongoing technical learning. His story is a great reminder that cloud expertise is often built step by step through real-world experience.

Geographical Location: I live in a mid-sized city in Latin America that has a growing tech scene. Over the last few years more startups and international companies have opened offices here, which has created a lot of opportunities for software developers.

For me it has been a great place to build a career while still enjoying a balanced lifestyle. I can work on modern cloud-based systems during the day and still get outside or spend time with family in the evenings.

Educational Background: I earned a bachelor’s degree in a technology-related field about a decade ago. My studies focused mainly on software development fundamentals like algorithms, databases, and system design.

At the time cloud computing was still emerging, so most of what I learned about cloud platforms came later while working professionally.

Once I started building real systems in the workplace, it became clear how important continuous learning was. Over the past few years I’ve taken online courses, explored documentation, and spent time building small projects to better understand modern cloud architectures.

Family Life: Family is a big part of keeping everything balanced. I’m married and we have a young child, so life can definitely get busy.

Balancing work, studying, and family responsibilities means I have to be intentional about how I manage my time. Weekends are usually reserved for family activities like going for walks, exploring nearby parks, or cooking meals together at home.

Those moments help me recharge after long weeks of coding and studying.

Current Role: I currently work as a mid-level software engineer at a company building digital products in the fintech and e-commerce space.

My day-to-day work involves writing backend code, integrating APIs, and working with cloud services to support scalable applications. Our team has been moving more of our systems toward cloud-native architectures, which means we’re relying more on managed services and distributed systems.

That shift has made cloud knowledge much more important in my daily work.

Career Path:  I started my career about eight or nine years ago as a general software developer.

Early on I worked across the full stack, learning both frontend and backend development. Over time I became more interested in backend systems and infrastructure, which naturally led me toward cloud technologies.

A turning point came when my team began migrating parts of our application infrastructure to the cloud. I realized that understanding the cloud ecosystem would be critical for building scalable systems and advancing my career.

That’s when I decided to start pursuing certifications.

Professional Level: At this stage in my career I consider myself a mid-level engineer who is still learning every day.

Technology evolves quickly, especially in the cloud space, so continuous learning has become part of the job. Certifications are one way I structure that learning and validate the skills I’m developing along the way.

Hobbies and Passions: After spending most of the day in front of a computer, I really value getting outside.

Hiking and long weekend walks are my favorite ways to reset after a busy work week. Being outdoors helps clear my head and gives me a break from screens and code.

I also enjoy cooking. I like experimenting with family recipes and trying to improve them a little each time. Cooking has a similar satisfaction to programming because you follow a process but still have room to experiment.

In my downtime I also enjoy reading science fiction and technology blogs.

Community Involvement: While I’m not deeply involved in formal tech communities yet, I enjoy sharing knowledge with coworkers and junior developers whenever I can.

Within our team we often review each other’s code, discuss architecture ideas, and explore new tools together. As I continue growing in my career, I would like to participate more actively in local developer meetups or online communities.

Learning Techniques: My learning approach is very hands-on.

I usually begin with structured material like online courses or documentation, but I try to apply what I learn right away. For example, if I’m studying a new AWS service, I’ll build a small personal project that uses it.

Even simple experiments help reinforce concepts much better than just reading about them.

Practice exams are also helpful because they highlight areas where my understanding isn’t as strong.

Passion Projects: One of my favorite side activities is experimenting with home automation projects.

I use small devices like Raspberry Pi boards to create simple automation setups or monitoring tools around the house. These projects are fun but also practical because they let me test networking, automation, and cloud integration ideas in a real environment.

It’s a great way to learn without the pressure of a production system.

Motivation for Certification: For me, certifications are a way to structure learning. Cloud platforms are huge and sometimes it’s difficult to know where to begin. Certification paths provide a clear roadmap that helps break the platform into manageable topics.

They also provide confidence that the knowledge you’ve gained is aligned with industry expectations.

Specific Certifications: I recently passed the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification. That exam helped me understand the big picture of AWS, including core services, pricing models, and architectural concepts.

Right now I’m studying for the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate certification. Since my daily work involves backend systems and cloud infrastructure, this certification feels like the natural next step.

Study Resources: My preparation typically includes several different resources.

I start with structured online courses to understand the core concepts. After that I review official documentation and spend time building small hands-on projects.

Certification Journey: Passing the Cloud Practitioner exam was an important milestone because it confirmed that I understood the overall AWS ecosystem.

The process also taught me that cloud certifications require practical understanding. Memorizing service names isn’t enough. You need to understand how services work together and why certain architectures are chosen.

That mindset has shaped how I’m preparing for the Solutions Architect exam.

Helpful Strategies: The most effective strategy for me has been building small projects while studying. Even simple exercises like deploying a serverless API or setting up cloud storage workflows make the concepts much clearer.

Another strategy that works well for me is studying consistently rather than trying to cram everything at once.

Other Advice: If someone is starting their cloud certification journey, I would recommend focusing on how services connect together rather than studying each service in isolation.

Cloud platforms are really about systems and architecture. When you understand the bigger picture, the individual services become much easier to learn.

Post-Certification Plans: After completing the AWS Solutions Architect certification, I want to contribute more to architecture discussions within my team. I’m especially interested in designing systems that are scalable, resilient, and easier to maintain over time.

Long-Term Goals: My goal is to become a strong cloud-focused engineer who can design and build modern distributed systems.

Cloud technology continues evolving rapidly, so continuous learning will always be part of the journey.

Community Impact: One of the things I appreciate most about the cloud community is how open it is. There are countless blogs, tutorials, and developers willing to share their knowledge online. Those resources make it possible for people around the world to learn these platforms even while working full time.
